Exploring the Galápagos with HX Expeditions: A Journey Like No Other

The Galápagos Islands have been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember.
As someone who helps others plan their dream vacations, I’ve always known this destination was something special, but experiencing it firsthand was even more powerful than I imagined. I finally had the chance to explore this extraordinary part of the world on an expedition cruise with HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions), and it was everything I hoped for.
This wasn’t just a vacation, it was a deep, immersive adventure into one of the most awe-inspiring natural environments on the planet.
What made this trip so remarkable?

1. No Crowds, No Overtourism
Each island in the Galapagos allows only a limited number of guests per day, creating an intimate, respectful, and unhurried experience. You’re never jostling for a photo or standing in a crowd. It’s just your small group, nature, and a quiet sense of wonder.
This carefully managed access protects the fragile ecosystem while giving travelers a front-row seat to incredible wildlife and vegetation. As you walk with your guide over the island, or snorkel in the pristine waters, you’re not bombarded with noise from other guests. You can soak it all in, uninterrupted.
2. Wildlife Encounters That Take Your Breath Away
The most incredible feature about the islands is their inhabitants’ lack of fear. The wildlife which call the islands home are so highly protected that they do not see humans as a threat. This allows guests to get up close and personal (but 6 feet apart!) with wildlife.
From blue-footed boobies and marine iguanas to sea lions that seem as curious about you as you are about them, the wildlife here is unlike anywhere else on Earth. You’re not just observing from a distance, you’re in it. Snorkeling with sea turtles, watching a mother sea lion nurse her pup, or gazing into the eyes of a 100-year-old tortoise. These are the kinds of experiences that remain imprinted on your heart forever.

3. A Team That Feels Like Family
All of the naturalists are required by law to be from the Galapagos Islands, and they are delighted to share their incredible home with guests. The naturalists were exceptional on HX. Passionate, knowledgeable, and warm, they didn’t just lead us, they journeyed with us.
Every hike, zodiac ride, and lecture felt like discovering something together. Even though they have done this many times, their enthusiasm never faded. They would emit gasps of joy over seeing a yellow horn owl or swimming with a hammerhead shark. Their joy enhanced our experience as we were reminded of just how special this ecosystem is.

But It's Not for Everyone
With that said, this trip isn’t for everyone. If you're dreaming of a laid-back vacation with flexible schedules and spa days, this isn’t the right fit. Your days are full, driven by the rhythms of nature and the ship’s touring schedule. If you’re not energized by being out in nature, or prefer to admire wildlife from a distance, you may not enjoy the up-close and active pace. And if food is your top priority, know that while meals were good and plentiful, this is not a gourmet dining experience. The focus here is on the journey, not the menu.

But if you have a sense of adventure, a love for wildlife, and a heart open to discovery, the Galápagos will move you in ways few places can. It’s humbling, exhilarating, and unforgettable.
