Alaskan cruises are lovely, included on many bucket lists for a reason. With crisp northern air, calving glaciers, wildlife sightings, and an unmatched sense of adventure, our 49th state has much to love.
However, if you only see Alaska by cruise, you’re missing out on half of the Alaskan experience.
This is why, when possible, I suggest clients take a one-way cruise between Vancouver and Alaska, extending their adventure with a few days (or more) on land.
When I make this suggestion, most guests think of spending time in Denali National Park (Mt. Whitney) or Fairbanks. However, I venture to say that the lesser-known Seward is worthy of being added to any itinerary.

Nestled on the shores of Resurrection Bay and backed by majestic mountains, Seward isn’t just a cruise stop—it’s a destination worth exploring on its own. This charming town offers experiences that elevate any journey.
Here’s why Seward is such a standout:

1. It’s a Gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park
Just minutes from town lies one of Alaska’s most breathtaking natural wonders. Kenai Fjords National Park is home to stunning tidewater glaciers and abundant wildlife. From boat tours that glide past massive icebergs to guided hikes to Exit Glacier, it’s the perfect pre- or post-cruise adventure for nature lovers.
2. Unforgettable Wildlife Encounters
Seward offers some of the best wildlife viewing in all of Alaska. Think sea otters floating on their backs, puffins darting through the air, and whales breaching in the distance. The Alaska SeaLife Center—an acclaimed marine research facility and aquarium—lets you get even closer, with hands-on exhibits and views into the icy waters below.

3. Small-Town Charm with Big Adventure
Despite its small size, Seward has a vibrant personality. Its waterfront promenade, colorful murals, cozy coffee shops, and fresh seafood restaurants make for a delightful day of exploration. You can easily spend a few hours strolling downtown or gear up for adventure with kayaking, zip-lining, or glacier trekking.
4. Scenic Rail and Road Connections
Getting to or from Seward is part of the adventure. The Alaska Railroad’s Coastal Classic route between Seward and Anchorage is one of the most scenic train rides in North America, with jaw-dropping views of fjords, waterfalls, and mountain valleys. Prefer to drive? The Seward Highway is a designated All-American Road—meaning it’s as stunning as it is efficient. Take time to stop at the Alaskan Wildlife Center to get up close to rehabilitated animals, or drop in at the Alyeska Resort to take a tram up the mountain for magnificent views. Wandering this highway is truly a delight,

5. Perfect for a Pre- or Post-Cruise Stay
With so much to see and do, Seward is ideal for extending your vacation just a little longer. Spend a night or two before boarding your ship to ease into the rhythm of Alaska, or linger after disembarking to soak up a few more memorable moments. Either way, Seward gives you the chance to slow down and truly connect with the Alaskan wilderness.
