I must start my post about Venice with a confession: I have never held Italy in high regard. Why not? Well, when I was 13, I went to Europe with a marching band. We spent 17 days on a whirlwind tour of 8 different countries. When it came to Italy, I only remembered some rude men looking me up and down, saying “Ah, American”. Apparently that made a strong impression on me, as it overshadowed all other memories of that country. Now, today, 23 years later, I have finally changed my mind. Wandering Aimlessly After our arrival in Venice this morning, we spent several hours hopping on and off the vaporettos (public water transportation) and wandering the streets. Without a set touring plan, we let our interests and whims guide us, simply choosing which direction to turn at each corner. We did not stay on the beaten path, but wandered at will, often finding ourselves alone in a small alley or campo. Stunning Displays As a result, we had a lovely day of admiring architecture, appreciating old buildings, and examining window displays. We saw beautiful glass bead jewelry, delectable desserts, and pasta in every shape and color gracing the windows. However, my very favorite display was that of wooden boxes filled with colored powder. At first I had no idea what it was, but then realized it was artist’s chalk, arranged by color families and truly a beautiful sight to behold. This is just one tiny example of the unexpected beauty to be found in this place…and why I must ask Italy to forgive me. The emotions of my youth blinded me to your true beauty, and the treasures to be found in your cities. My eyes have now been opened, and I can appreciate all that you have to offer. Viva Italia!
